In honor of Edward Karolasz, a 25-year-old staff sergeant killed in action in Iraq, members of the community are invited to gather to form a human chain Saturday, as the funeral procession escorts Karolasz to his final resting place. American flags will be distributed to be held up in Edward's honor as he is taken to Holy Cross Cemetary in North Arlington.
Karolasz, who was a lifelong resident of Kearny, died Nov. 19 when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee in Beiji, Iraq. He was a 1999 graduate of Kearny High School and a former alter server at St. Stephen's Church.
Karolasz had also been a member of Kearny's American Legion for the past two years. As a tribute to his service, members of the American Legion will present his family with the gold star flag.
